Psychoeducational assessments and impact they can have for your child.

Knowledge is Power

Many parents come in my practice ask me what is the importance of

Psychoeducational testing for their children. A psychoeducational assessment can identify learning challenges in students of all ages, from young children to adults. It identifies areas of strength and weakness in a student’s learning profile and provides a deeper understanding of their educational abilities. In many cases, it is an eye opening experience that enables you to empower your children to reach their full potential.

Unmotivated at school or could it be something else?

A child’s performance in a school setting can be in the just average range academically. His/her teacher may say that your child appears bored, uninterested and unmotivated.  Is something else going on? Could there be other factors at play? For example, is the curriculum not challenging enough and causing them to be unmotivated to participate.  As a parent you don’t really know until you have a valid measure to determine this.

With assessment testing you might be surprised to find out that your child actually tests two to three grade levels ahead.  Now you have real data to share with your child’s teacher and the school. This provides teachers and parents’ insight on how to better understand your child and what is optimal to their learning.

Another scenario could be that your child is struggling when it comes to word problems but is brilliant at their computational mathematical skills.

When a Psychoeducational assessment is done, you will be able to identify your child’s struggles and where they need extra help. In this example, they might need less support around math but need extra attention when it comes to critical thinking exercises. You are equipped with deeper understanding of your child’s strengths and can guide them to overcome their weaknesses.

You can then modify what you need in assistance and/or tutoring for your child to fully succeed in an academic school setting.

During my years of practice assisting families with tutoring and testing, I can say that Psychoeducational testing serves as an important tool to harness your children’s greatest learning potential. Most importantly, it saves parents a lot of the guess work and frustration they can experience in the process of their children’s education.
